There will be a Blessing of the Animals in the church taking place this Friday, October 2nd, at approximately 12:15 p.m. led by Deacon Michael Tateishi. The blessing will begin at around 12:15 p.m. due to parking concerns related to school pick up at 12:00 p.m. All are welcome! St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
*Please note: there was a typo in the parish calendar section of last weekend's bulletin which incorrectly listed the Blessing of the Animals taking place at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 3rd. The Blessing of the Animals will take place on Friday, October 2nd and not Saturday, October 3rd. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Unable to attend the Blessing of the Animals this Friday? We also have prayer cards and holy water available in the church and parish office so you can bless your own pets. Many people bring their pets to the church to be blessed on or near St. Francis’ feast day because of his love for animals, as expressed in his Canticle of the Creatures. However, if you are not able to bring your pet for the Blessing of the Animals at OLA this Friday, you can pray for and bless your pets and animals at home, too! A verbal blessing and a sprinkling of holy water can be offered in your backyard, garden, or anywhere inside your home.
The formal Order of Blessing Animals can be found here. This order of blessing may be used by a layperson by following the rites and prayers designated for a lay minister.
This shorter blessing can also be used:
Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air, and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.
